AZEK vs. TimberTech vs. Trex: Which Composite is Best for Wisconsin?

March 5, 2026

The Three Composites We Build With

After building 200+ decks across Northeast Wisconsin, we've worked extensively with all three major composite brands. Each has genuine strengths. Here's what we've learned from real-world performance in Wisconsin's demanding climate.

AZEK — The Premium Choice

AZEK uses a PVC-based core (not wood-plastic composite), which gives it the best moisture resistance of any decking product on the market. In Wisconsin, where freeze-thaw cycling is constant from November through April, this matters. AZEK boards won't absorb moisture, so they won't swell, crack, or deteriorate the way wood-composite cores can over time.

Price: $55–$75/sq ft installed. Warranty: Limited lifetime. Best for: Lakefront properties, pool decks, ground-level decks where moisture contact is constant.

TimberTech — The Balanced Option

TimberTech (owned by AZEK) offers both PVC and capped composite lines. Their composite boards use a wood-plastic core wrapped in a protective polymer cap. The cap does the heavy lifting on weather resistance, and the product performs well in Wisconsin conditions.

Price: $45–$65/sq ft installed. Warranty: 25–30 years (depending on line). Best for: Most residential projects where you want premium aesthetics at a moderate price.

Trex — The Value Leader

Trex is the most recognized composite brand in the market. Their capped composite products have improved significantly over the past decade. The Transcend and Enhance lines both perform well in Wisconsin, though the wood-plastic core means slightly more susceptibility to moisture absorption compared to PVC-core products.

Price: $38–$55/sq ft installed. Warranty: 25 years. Best for: Budget-conscious projects where you want composite benefits without the premium price.

Our Recommendation

There's no wrong choice among these three — they're all vastly superior to pressure-treated lumber for Wisconsin decks. Our recommendation depends on your specific situation:

Near water (lake, pool, river): AZEK. Most residential projects: TimberTech. Budget-focused: Trex. We'll discuss material options during your project review and recommend what makes sense for your conditions and budget.
